How your period can affect your immune system

Hi Lovelies,

Today I want to dive into something that’s close to my heart—and that I know affects so many of us every month. Have you ever noticed that just before your period, you might feel a bit rundown, or even come down with a cold? It’s not a coincidence!

Our immune system and menstrual cycle are more connected than we might think. Throughout the month, your body goes through a lot behind the scenes, including fluctuations in hormones that impact everything from energy levels to immunity.

For many of us, the body’s natural immune defenses can dip a little in the luteal phase (just before your period). This means we’re more likely to feel tired or susceptible to those seasonal bugs.

Why Does This Happen?

In the lead-up to menstruation, progesterone and estrogen shift, and while this is perfectly normal, it can leave us feeling more sensitive. Lower estrogen can make it easier for stress to sneak in and affect how we feel, both mentally and physically.

But here’s the good news: by recognising this pattern, we can lean into a few wellness routines to help our bodies find balance. For me, it’s been about finding small but meaningful ways to support myself before, during, and after my period.

My go-to tips for immune support

  1. Nourish with whole foods
Autumn brings a harvest of immune-boosting vegetables like squash, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens. These are rich in vitamin A, C, and antioxidants that nourish the immune system and support hormonal balance.

  2. Magnesium magic
One of my favourite ways to unwind is with bath salts infused with magnesium. This mineral is a true multitasker: it helps with cramps, soothes the body for restful sleep, and can calm the mind. I’ve found that a warm bath before bed is an easy way to feel more refreshed, and it’s a habit I genuinely look forward to each month.

  3. Rest & recharge
I used to power through my pre-period days, ignoring the fatigue. Now, I try to be kinder to myself, carving out time to relax. Whether it’s with a cozy blanket and a book, or that relaxing evening bath, taking these moments to slow down can do wonders.

  4. Stay hydrated
Hormonal shifts can make us prone to dehydration, so sipping water or herbal teas can help. Ginger tea is one of my favourites—gentle on the stomach and great for digestion.

Finding balance

Periods are a natural, healthy part of life, and while they may not always come at the perfect time, small changes like these can really make a difference. At KIKI & GREEN, we’re all about creating happier, healthier cycles. Our pads are just one part of this journey, designed to support you in comfort and well-being, without chemicals or harsh materials.

P.S. If you’ve never tried bath salts, I’d highly recommend it—especially if you’re looking for a natural way to ease cramps and help you sleep better. Magnesium is such a treat for your body and can be especially helpful during this time.

Here’s to embracing every part of our cycle, with a little extra love and care!

Always wishing you the best,
