The Period Blood Colour Decoder: What Your Cycle Is Telling You

When I first switched to reusable pads, one thing I didn’t expect was just how much more connected I’d feel to my cycle.

I know it might sound odd, but truly seeing your flow- even if it's just briefly before you pop your pad in the wash - gives you a new kind of insight. And while our pads are super absorbent (so you won’t see much blood once it’s been absorbed), that little glimpse can tell you a lot about what’s going on with your body.

Because your period is more than just a monthly nuisance - it’s a vital sign.
It’s your body’s way of saying: “Hey, here’s how things are going.”

Let’s decode what those colours actually mean…

💗 Light Pink

What it could mean:

  • Low oestrogen

  • Spotting between periods

  • Could be common at the beginning or end of your period

When to pay attention:
If you consistently see light pink spotting mid-cycle or if your period always seems unusually light, it may be worth chatting to a health professional. It can also be linked to overexercising or under-eating.

🔴 Bright Red

What it could mean:

  • Healthy, steady flow

  • Often seen at the start of your period

When to pay attention:
If your flow is suddenly heavier than usual, or you’re soaking through pads quickly, it’s worth tracking. A brighter red colour with intense cramps might be your body’s way of saying it’s time to slow down.

🩷 Many women in our community with heavy flow days say that using our Heat Soothie has been a game-changer. It’s a natural way to relax the body, calm the cramps, and feel held during that intense first day.

🍷 Dark Red or Brown

What it could mean:

  • Older blood (oxidised)

  • Usually appears at the beginning or end of your period

When to pay attention:
If your flow is consistently brown and sluggish, or smells unusual, it could be a sign of hormonal imbalance or buildup. Keep an eye on it, especially if you notice other PMS symptoms getting worse.

🖤 Deep Purple or Very Dark Blood

What it could mean:

  • Possible high oestrogen

  • Slower shedding of the uterine lining

When to pay attention:
If this is a regular thing and you also have heavy cramps, clotting, or PMS symptoms like breast tenderness or irritability, your oestrogen may be too high in comparison to progesterone.

📌 This is where reducing stress and supporting your liver (through things like fibre, leafy greens, and rest) can really help. A warm bath, magnesium-rich salts, and our calming candle can create a hormone-supporting ritual that eases your cycle.

What About Clots?

Clots can be totally normal, especially on heavier days. Small clots (like a 5p coin) aren't usually a concern. But if you’re seeing large, frequent clots or feel wiped out during your period, it might be worth getting your iron levels checked or discussing heavy menstrual bleeding with your GP.

The Takeaway: Your Period is a Messenger

You don’t need to obsess over every colour change - but becoming aware of your cycle is empowering. You deserve to feel calm, confident, and in tune with your body.

That’s exactly why I started KIKI & GREEN - so women could have a period care experience that felt comfortable, trustworthy, and even a little bit luxurious.

Our reusable pads are:
✔ Toxin-free
✔ Ridiculously comfy
✔ Ultra-absorbent (even on heavy days)
✔ Kind to your body and the planet

And if you're dealing with cramps or just want to feel a little more supported during your cycle, our Heat Soothie was designed with you in mind.

One Last Thought

If you’re reading this and thinking, “Hmm… I’ve never really looked at my flow before,” that’s totally okay. The point isn’t to overanalyse - just to tune in. A quick glance before tossing your pad in the wash can help you feel more connected to what’s happening in your body.

And that awareness?
That’s a form of self-love.

With love,
